Other Businesses, Government Agencies, Schools, and Organizations

Mercury LampOrganizations that are not private residences and that do not qualify as conditionally exempt small businesses (click here for small business qualifications) should already be recycling waste mercury lamps.

These organizations must also comply with the streamlined management requirements of the California Universal Waste Rule Regulations.

All businesses should have a lamp management plan to ensure that they are in compliance with the State’s universal waste regulations.

The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) recommends that businesses:

  • Develop a formal written lamp management plan
  • Train employees on the proper management of waste mercury lamps
  • Follow the plan for day-to-day lamp management
  • Periodically revise the plan when it fails or when simpler or more cost effective alternatives become available
