RCRA Listed Hazardous Waste (Title 22 CCR Article 4)RCRA hazardous waste lists were created based on US EPA established criteria. For a waste to be listed as a hazardous waste, it must pose a threat in the absence of special regulation and typically exhibits a hazardous waste characteristic or contains chemicals that would render it hazardous. A waste is compared to the listing description and conditions; if the waste matches the listing, it is a listed hazardous waste. In hazardous waste lists, the process or industry that created the waste is more important than the waste’s actual hazardous characteristics or the concentration of chemicals it may contain.
Sources of Waste The Code of Federal Regulations lists 3 sources of wastes: (1) non-specific sources; (2) specific sources; and (3) discarded commercial chemical products, off-specification species and spill residues. Sources SWF
Hazard Code Each item on a CFR listing is noted with a letter(s) which designates the hazard or reason why the waste was listed: I = ignitable waste
The source of the waste is the process that created it.
