Listed hazardous wastes from specific sources have codes beginning with “K” followed by a three-digit number (e.g. K001).
- Unlike the F listed wastes, they are dependent on the specified industry, process, or waste source.
- Like the F listed wastes, they are independent of the concentration of chemicals present in the waste.
Some specific sources of waste (K listings) are:
- Wood preservation
- Inorganic pigment
- Organic chemicals
- Inorganic chemicals
- Pesticides
- Explosives
- Petroleum refining
- Iron and steel
- Veterinary pharmaceuticals
- Primary copper
- Primary lead
- Primary zinc
- Primary aluminum
- Ferroalloys
- Secondary lead processing
- Ink formulation
- Coking (processing of coal to produce coke)
Example: Specific Source Waste (K001)
For K001, the federal code reads:
“Bottom sediment sludge from the treatment of wastewaters from wood preserving processes that use creosote and/or pentachlorophenol.”
First, identify the key terms:
“Bottom sediment sludge from the treatment of wastewaters from wood preserving processes that use creosote and/or pentachlorophenol.”

Terms that identify the criteria
Specific chemicals addressed in this listing |
Next, separate the criteria presented in the K001 listing:
- bottom sediment sludge
- from the treatment of wastewaters
- from wood preserving processes
- that use creosote and/or pentachlorophenol
Finally, translate the meaning of the criteria.
To be listed as K001:
- the waste must be from a wood preserving facility or where wood preservation is performed
- the facility must use creosote and/or pentachlorophenol
- the facility must generate and treat wastewater
- the K001 waste is only bottom sediment sludge from a wastewater treatment unit
