Once waste has been classified as a hazardous waste, it seems like the job is done, right? Not exactly: once identified as hazardous, it also is important to know what category of hazardous waste it belongs to:

RCRA Hazardous Waste
Non-RCRA Hazardous Waste (including Special Waste)
Acutely and Extremely Hazardous Waste

The category dictates:

Land disposal restrictions
Treatment standards
Generator fees
Disposal fees

The hazardous waste category also dictates DTSC’s discretionary authority for variances, and whether tiered permitting may apply to the hazardous waste.
