Sampling Objectives

Data from the testing of a sample is only as meaningful as the purpose of the sample collection; the data may be meaningless if you don’t know what it represents. Consider these questions when designing a sampling plan:

  • Is the sample collected by a generator for waste classification purposes?
  • Are samples being collected to determine the extent and depth of contamination from a spill?
  • Are you an inspector taking a random sample to check up on the generator’s waste classification determination?
  • Are you an inspector responding to an anonymous complaint that illegal disposal is being conducted in the ditch next to the business?
Objectives

Identify your regulatory or scientific objectives. Usually, the samples will be collected to:

  • Determine what is present in the sample
  • Confirm the presence or absence of contaminants; or
  • Compare the sample to criteria or regulatory thresholds.
