Information on hazardous materials may be gained from a variety of different resources. These resources include:

When attempting to obtain information on the physical, chemical, or toxicological properties of substances, it is important to consult numerous resources. Each resource will be available to provide specific types of information which are not available in other resources. Occasionally, information from different resources will differ on the same substance.

  1. Consult at least three resources to verify information.
  2. Find and use those resources which you are confident with.

In classifying wastes, it is important to gather as much information as possible. This information is important not only for personal protection during sampling, but may also be used to:

  1. Develop a sampling plan
  2. Determine which analytical tests should be performed on the samples
