Hazard Communication: Material Safety Data Sheets

Employees have a right to know about the chemical hazards in their workplace, pursuant to Section 5194, 8 CCR. This is known as hazard communication and is accomplished by the use of labels, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and training about those chemicals. This information is available to any inspector at a hazardous substance (or waste) site and may be useful when selecting personal protective equipment, sampling and preservation methods, and analytical techniques to be used to determine the hazardous characteristics of the samples obtained.

An MSDS must include:

  • Product identity including:
    1. Chemical name and synonyms
    2. Chemical Abstract Service Number
  • Physical and chemical characteristics, including:
    1. Appearance and odor
    2. formula
    3. formula weight
  • Fire, explosion, and reactivity hazards, including:
    1. compatible chemical family
    2. DOT class
    3. Reactivity
  • Health hazards; symptoms and routes of exposure, cancer agents
  • Legal exposure limits
  • Precautions for safe handling
  • Protective control measures
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Emergency and first aid measures
